Nicola Luisotti
Nicola Luisotti, Principal Guest Conductor at Teatro Real in Madrid, hails from Bargecchia, Italy. He studied piano, trumpet, composition, and conducting, starting his career in various prominent Italian theaters, first as a répétiteur, then as an assistant to Riccardo Muti and Lorin Maazel, and finally as a chorus master at Teatro La Fenice in Venice. He made his conducting debut in Catania in 1997 and his opera conducting debut in 2000 in Trieste with Verdi’s Stiffelio. In 2001, he debuted at the Stuttgart State Opera with Il trovatore, establishing himself as a leading conductor for Italian repertoire there. Around the same time, he received invitations to the Paris Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and to Japan. Shortly after his debut at San Francisco Opera in 2005, he was appointed Music Director, a role he held until 2018. During his tenure, he conducted over 40 different operas, including the world premiere of Marco Tutino’s La Ciociara, Salome, Lohengrin, Don Carlo, and the three Mozart-Da Ponte operas, along with numerous concerts. In recognition of his artistic achievements, he received the San Francisco Opera Medal in 2018. Additionally, from 2012 to 2014, Luisotti served as Music Director at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, where he led a historic performance of Verdi’s Requiem in a collaboration between Teatro San Carlo and San Francisco Opera, uniting both theaters' orchestras and choirs.
Recent engagements included Tosca, Un ballo in maschera, and La traviata at Teatro Real, Il trovatore at La Scala, and concerts with the orchestras of La Scala, Teatro Carlo Felice, and Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana. He also achieved notable successes at Los Angeles Opera, and in Dresden, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Valencia, Turin, Genoa, and Bologna. For the 100th anniversary of Puccini’s La fanciulla del West, he conducted the work at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, earning him the 39th Premio Puccini Award. He has also conducted major international orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Orchestre de Paris, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonia Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony, and NHK Orchestra.
Upcoming projects include La Bohème and Nabucco at Teatro Real, La traviata at Suntory Hall in Japan, Macbeth at Zurich Opera, and various concert programs.
Luisotti made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2007 with Simon Boccanegra and, in the current season, will conduct Falstaff, La traviata, and Manon Lescaut there.
