Joby Talbot
Joby Talbot was born in London in 1971. He studied composition privately with Brian Elias and at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, before completing a Master of Music in Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Simon Bainbridge.
Talbot’s diverse catalogue includes full-length narrative ballets and contemporary dance works, small- and large-scale choral and vocal works, orchestral pieces, concerti and scores for the screen.
Chroma with choreographer Wayne McGregor for the Royal Ballet was Talbot’s first major work for ballet. It was followed by two further collaborations with McGregor, Genus (Paris Opera Ballet, 2007) and Entity (Random Dance, 2008). Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with choreographer Christopher Wheeldon was the first full-length narrative score commissioned by The Royal Ballet in 20 years, and the work has gone on to be universally hailed as a modern classic. Besides The Winter’s Tale, for which he was awarded the prestigious Prix Benois de la Danse for composition in 2015, Talbot’s further collaborations with Christopher Wheeldon include Tide Harmonic (2009), a work for large ensemble that began life as the score for Eau by choreographer Carolyn Carlson and CCN Roubaix; and Fool’s Paradise (2007), adapted from Talbot’s score for silent film The Dying Swan. His most recent collaboration with Wheeldon was their third full length ballet Like Water for Chocolate, for the Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, premiered in June 2022 in the Royal Opera House London and one year later at the Metropolitan Opera New York.
Talbot’s critically acclaimed first opera, Everest, was given its premiere in 2015 by The Dallas Opera. His opera based on the true story The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, a further collaboration with librettist Gene Sheer, premiered in November 2023.
Important ensembles that have performed Talbot’s works include the Philharmonia Orchestra London, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Calder Quartet, The King’s Singers, the Britten Sinfonia and Britten Voices, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Ballet London, National Ballet of Canada, American Ballet Theatre, Hamburg Ballett, Bolshoi Ballet Moscow, Paris Opera Ballet, Random Dance, Dallas Opera, Independent Opera and the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.
Talbot’s Fool’s Paradise to Wheeldon’s choreography of the same name was performed at the Vienna State Opera in 2015 as part of the ballet premiere Thoss/Wheeldon/Robbins. The Winter’s Tale, one of his full-length ballet scores, will have its Austrian premiere with the Vienna State Ballet in November 2024.
