Wolfgang Heinz

Wolfgang Heinz was born in Wiesbaden and grew up in Munich. After a time as an assistant at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich with Giuseppe Patané, he studied conducting and piano at the Cologne Academy of Music. As a Kapellmeister at the theatres in Essen, Detmold, Plauen and Pforzheim and as a guest in Hagen, Magdeburg and Dessau, he gained rich experience in a broad opera repertoire. After his time as music director of the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, he moved to the Staatstheater Stuttgart in 1999 and has conducted opera and ballet there ever since. From 2002 to 2006 he was musical director of the Stuttgart State Opera’s Junge Oper, and since 2008 he has been deputy music director of the Stuttgart Ballet. Here he is responsible for a rich repertoire and accompanies the company on almost all international tours.
Guest engagements since 2004 have taken him to the Bavarian State Ballet, the opera houses in Ankara and Mexico City, the New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, the Teatro Real Madrid, Teatro São Carlos Lisbon, the Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm, Opéra National du Rhin Strasbourg and Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp. Since 2009 Wolfgang Heinz has been permanent guest conductor of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
He has worked with the New City Orchestra Tokyo, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Colonne Paris, Prime Orchestra Seoul, Symphony Orchestra Osaka as well as the State Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow and conducted concerts of the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, the Hessisches Staatsorchester Wiesbaden or the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen.
At the podium of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, he will make his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2023/24 with the musical direction of the ballet Giselle and the Nureyev Gala.
