Luca Salsi
Luca Salsi was born in San Secondo Parmense. He graduated in singing from the “Arrigo Boito” Conservatory in Parma under the tutelage of soprano Lucetta Bizza and continued his training with baritone Carlo Meliciani. His career has led him to perform major roles on the world’s greatest stages: the Metropolitan in New York, Teatro alla Scala, the London Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Washington National Opera, Salzburg Festival, Los Angeles Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Liceu de Barcelona, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Teatro Real in Madrid. He has worked with great conductors including Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly, Valery Gergiev, James Levine, Daniele Gatti, James Conlon, Gustavo Dudamel, Nicola Luisotti, Renato Palumbo, Donato Renzetti, Michele Mariotti and Alberto Zedda and with eminent stage directors such as Robert Carsen, Hugo De Ana, Antony Minghella, Werner Herzog, Franco Zeffirelli, David McVicar and Damiano Michieletto.
He has twice opened the season at Teatro alla Scala: in 2017 in Andrea Chénier and in 2019 in Tosca, on both occasions alongside Anna Netrebko and conducted by Riccardo Chailly. He has also inaugurated the Parma Verdi Festival in Macbeth and the 2018/19 season at Teatro La Fenice, again as Macbeth (with stage direction by Damiano Michieletto, conducted by Myung-whun Chung). He made his debut as Iago in Otello with the Berliner Philharmoniker and has performed as Macbeth under conductor Riccardo Muti (in Florence and Ravenna), as Rodrigo in Don Carlo at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and for the opening of the season at Madrid’s Teatro Real, as Carlo in Ernani at Teatro alla Scala, Germont in La traviata and Scarpia in Tosca at the Opéra de Paris, as Nabucco and Gérard in Andrea Chénier at the Wiener Staatsoper, Simon Boccanegra at the Salzburg Festival (with Valery Gergiev conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker), and again Germont in La traviata at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. In February 2020 he made his debut as Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti. In November 2020 he sang as Iago for the first time in Italy, in a new production by Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and on 7th December he took part in the performance entitled “To see again the stars” at Teatro alla Scala.
In 2021 he made his debut as Ernesto in the opera Il Pirata at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. The following month he sang as Rodrigo in Don Carlo at the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti in Modena. Highlights of his 2021 schedule include performances as Amonasro in Aida at the Royal Opera House in London, Scarpia in Tosca (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Salzburger Festspiel, Teatro Real and Bayerische Staatsoper), Macbeth at the Wiener Staatsoper, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Teatro alla Scala.
